Roles of Community Home Based Carers

  • Caregivers advocate for and promote health and general activities that promote wellbeing, including good nutrition and daily exercise.
  • Provide effective care to all service users in their communities.
  • Communicate effectively to all stakeholders in communities.
  • Submit the required reports to supervisors at Bona Lesedi regularly.
  • Engage in constructive feedback/discussion and planning every Friday with the management team at Bona Lesedi.
  • Assist with placement for people with disabilities.

Academic Support

Bona Lesedi provide support to University of Witwatersrand students an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the knowledge on disability issues and community development that they have gained during the lecture of this course:

4th Occupational and 3rd  years Physiotherapy Students from University of Witwatersrand

Planning and facilitation of the following intervention programmes:

  • Curative/ Therapeutic
  • Rehabilitative
  • Promotion
  • Prevention
  • Referral where needed.

Helping service users who are temporarily or permanently impaired by:

  • Illness
  • Accident
  • Disability environmental limitations or Developmental Delay.

Occupational therapy students

To skill students in helping clients who are temporarily or permanently impaired by illness, accident, disability, environmental limitations or developmental delay.

 

Physio therapy students

Be trained to assess, treat and prevent disorders in human movement caused by injury and disease. Students are often members of medical teams that treat sports injuries and ill persons, and help disabled people to lead lives with as much independence as possible.

Hippo therapy

Shumbashabas Therapeutic Riding Program augments the work of Bona Lesedi, contributing positively to:

The cognitive, physical, emotional and social well-being of its care-users with special needs/intellectual disabilities.

It extends from riding with a treatment goal to riding as a sport with an opportunity to enter competitions co-hosted with Special Olympics S.A.

It also provides an opportunity for physiotherapy and occupational therapy students, who are conducting their practical’s at Bona Lesedi, to gain exposure to this form of therapy which is offered as a post-graduate course.

Skills Development

At the moment we are in the process of applying for Learnership for bakery at FoodBev whilst building a relationship with Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries

Skills development assists in alleviating poverty and un-employment; promoting independence and interdependence; facilitating integration into the community; and preparing and empowering those living with disabilities for leadership in their communities and success in their personal lives.

Antenatal Classes

Pregnant mothers participate in educational session based on nutrition, early child development and exercises during labour to help parents prepare for labourbirth and early parenthood which take place at O.R. Tambo Clinic every Friday.

Cerebral Palsy and Developmental Delay Support group

Developed knowledge and skills of mothers of children with Cerebral Palsy, developing their milestones, facilitating independence, providing training regarding the use of assistive devices and playing with their children

Discoverers CHC / Jo’burg Metro Rehab

Community Service Therapist creates awareness of disability issues in a community as well as increases community members’ knowledge about services available for people with disability in their community.

 

The inter professional team work on the design of exercises, the building of access ramps, drafting home care programs,  placement and grant applications to help each service user lead a fuller and more independent life.
